Day 100/365 Gaint Miniture!

Day 100/365 Gaint Miniture!
DAY 100!!! Helen, GA

If you like trains and models than you will love the little place I stopped in today. Charlemange’s Kingdom. A small model train and toy store in Helen, GA. When you first walk in you’d think its just a small shop. But behind the large double wooden doors lies a Model so large, it wouldn’t fit in my house. Over 2400 square feet of space houses this 50′ by 20′ model train masterpiece. It is a -1.87 scale model of the Germany. Owner and creator Willi Lindhorst and wife Linda have spent the past 25 years working on this amazing piece of moving art. I first came into this shop while on a May have 2010 when on a short road trip. I had wanted to see the model but didn’t get the time to do so. This time I figured why not make it part of the project. Joyce and I set out for Charlemange’s Kingdom shortly after noon today. The sun was high in the sky and the breeze was warm. Spring was in the air and it was a nice change from the brisk cold of the North.

We first met WIlli who was at the register. I stated in on what has become nearly a script. I asked him if the creator of the model was there. He said yes. I said, "Am I looking at the creator" and again he answered yes. After the brief introduction and explanation he gave us a brochure and showed us into the room. My first impression was Holy Sh*%!! It was by far the largest model I’ve ever seen. It even had mountains stretching 22 feet in the air. No where near the 14,000+ feet of the real thing but large nonetheless. Joyce and I took the self guided tour and scouted out possible spots for the shoot. We settled on the 2nd floor corner as it had the most room for my lights. We setup two AB800’s with Softboxes and After a few minutes of testing Willi stepped in. This was the shortest shoot by far. I had only snapped 5 shots before I wrapped up. We then went downstairs to grab the background shot. I knew from the start that I was going to composite this shot as there was no way of shooting Willi fully lit in front of the model. Space was just not available in the space we needed space to be!

Willi ended up taking the only piece of removable glass out and we shot at a low angle to get an almost helicopter view of the shore. I asked how in the world he worked on this. His answer was simple. "I walk on water" He uses the river system as a walk way to get from point to point.

He had once had the whole model computer controlled but switched back to old fashioned relays after his frustration that a 2 year old could operate the computer better than he could. Don’t worry, WIlli… there are plenty of people in the same boat.

The light was dark in the room and since there were moving trains and hot air balloons I wasn’t able to grab a long exposure. I instead opted to fake the sunlight using one AB800. This ended up working beautifully as it allowed me to stop the action and give the model an early afternoon or early morning light.

I ended up compositing the wide shot next to the close up not because I think its looks better. No, I actually think it takes away from the effect. I did it only to show the vast scope of Willi’s hard work.

If you’d like to visit WIlli and his magnificent model, Simply travel to Helen, GA. And of course… tell Willi I said hello.

Later Joyce and I from a tip from Willi’s wife Linda, went to see both the old covered bridge and the on route water falls. We drove down Highway 255 and upon seeing the bridge just kept driving. It looked like a southern teenaged party. About 6 big 4 wheel drive trucks and a ton of overly skinny shirtless teenagers populated the bridge and surrounding area. So much for a quaint piece of history.

The falls on the other hand were amazing. We had made our way down the 1062 steps to the gorge floor of Talluah Falls. Here we snapped a few pictures and bet on who would fall into the water while crossing the slippery rocks. Joyce and I get along great because we both have the same sense of humor. Going up the 1062 stairs was not going to be fun, But since I wasn’t about to look weak, I sucked it up and made my way up. Joyce took several breaks and of course, I picked on her for them. Its playful teasing and she knows it. About 3/4 of the way up I mis-judge a step and fell forward. With camera in one hand and 28mm-105mm lens in the other I have no defense against slamming my face into the steal steps. Instinctively I put my hand down and as my hand hits the stair the camera takes a slight jolt and the lens cap to my 11mm-16mm falls off and drops about 10 or more feet down. For a second I was going to just say screw it. But… since I was already sweaty and exercising, why not add rock climbing too! I hop over the wood railing and make my way down. I grab my lens cap and what do you know… I find another one right next to it. It’s a nikon 58 mm cap. Just the right size to fit on my capless 28mm-105mm! Jackpot I say as I climb back up. Dropping my cap was so worth finding a new on

He has been described as a legend in one’s own time is certainly a blatantly abused clichs but no one has taken a vivid imagination and unusual persona to the people with as much controversy and success as Alice Cooper. Call him Master of Shock Rock, Black Humorist Supreme, or simply one of the era’s great showmen, his mark has been undeniable. Lennard Promotions, in association with Music Max, proudly announces the forthcoming Alice Cooper’s Theatre Of Death Australian Tour in August 2009 – Tickets on Sale from usual outlets on Monday 4th May.

Alice Cooper received his long-awaited star on the legendary Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2003, as well as lifetime achievement awards from both Classic Rock and Mojo, two of the most important rock music magazines in the world, and has a syndicated Monday-Friday rockn roll radio show, launched in 2004, which is already on over 100 stations worldwide. With the release of Along Came A Spider, his 2008 album, Alice showsno sign of slowing down. Recent Alice tour highlights have included astop at the legendary Montreux Festival, filmed for a live DVD, three shows in 2006 in North America as special guests to The Rolling Stones, and concerts throughout North & South America, Europe, Australia, NewZealand, and Asia.

Debuting in 1970, he soon turned the music world upside down, wearingoutrageous clothing and make-up, performing loud hard music framingsharp-edged lyrics. "We were into fun, sex, death and money when everybody was into peace and love," Alice explains. "We wanted to seewhat was next. It turned out we were next, and we drove a stake through the heart of the Love Generation."Alice Cooper touched a deep nerve in the minds of teenagers everywhere, bringing him countless gold and platinum albums from around the world, including "Love It To Death," "Billion Dollar Babies," "Welcome To My Nightmare," and "Trash, featuring such anthems as "Eighteen," "Elected,""School’s Out," and "No More Mr. Nice Guy," as well as the classics "OnlyWomen Bleed" and "Poison." His recording successes notwithstanding, it is on stage, both musicallyand visually, that Alice has had his greatest impact. Colossal concerttours utilizing multi-level stage sets and elaborate scenery in waysunprecedented for a rock band. Audiences gasped and cheered at suchprops as the magic movie screen, a guillotine, an electric chair, and ag allows (with Alice invariably the victim). Each tour continually topped the preceding one, setting a standard for technical wizardry and sheer theatrical imagination. The gallows made its return in 2007, for the first time since 1988.

Alice Cooper was one of the first rock stars to have his own Marvel comic in the ’70’s. Alice’s 1994 album, "The Last Temptation," was a multi-media event, released in conjunction with a trilogy of Marvel comics, based on the concept of the album, done in collaboration with noted graphic novel author Neil Gaiman, best-known for his "Sandman" series. He has appeared (with stars including Mae West and Gene Wilder, among others) in movies and television, including, mostnotably, "Wayne’s World," "Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare,""Roadie," "John Carpenter’s Prince of Darkness," and "Something Wilder," with Gene Wilder.

Alice’s 2000 and 2001 albums, Brutal Planet and Dragontown, wereharsh and intense depictions of a world on the brink, while The Eyes ofAlice Cooper (2003) and Dirty Diamonds (2005) were more old-fashioned brash, play-it-loud rock and roll albums, their roots plantedfirmly in familiar Alice territory. 2008 brought the release Along Came A Spider, reviewed widely as a worthy addition to Alice’s catalog of themed albums, setting the story ofa serial killer to music. Classic Alice, yet contemporary as well. The road is still Alice’s second home as he continues to tour extensively throughout the world, with a full schedule planned for his 2009 itinerary, from May into December .And then theres Golf Monster, Alice’s autobiographical book about how he transferred his alcohol addiction to a golf addiction, chock full of anecdotes, photos, golf tips, and Alices trademark sense of humor. The book published in hardcover in 2007 and then in paperback in 2008.

Alice Cooper has brought show business and rock ‘n roll together in ways never seen before (and rarely seen since). It is not surprising that, afterall the shock waves he has caused, the legend of Alice Cooper continues strong into the new millennium.

"Theatre Of Death" is a brand new show devised by Alice Cooper to shock and thrill his legions of Australian fans in August 2009 – who knows what mysteries will be unveiled!!!
